Project Overview

A new major facility comprising flexible teaching and learning spaces and new Administration building that unite previous stages of redevelopment on the site. The project also involves a redesign of the central landscape space that fosters diversity in outdoor learning and a water sensitive response to urban design.

Located in the southern metropolitan suburb of Dingley, the design for a new Administration and flexible Learning Community at Dingley Primary School was the final stage in the rebuild of the entire precinct for the school. The design for the site also involved a strong focus on rejuvenating the central courtyard area that was badly drained and also provided little ability for the children to engage with outdoor teaching.
As the siting of the new buildings are right in the heart of an operational school, careful consideration of decanting and how the new buildings would relate to their surrounds was considered. Through several workshops, the staff and students worked together with K2LD to develop an Admin building that has multiple connections to the Hub, oval, main entry and adjacent learning community. The new Learning Community has a strong indoor / outdoor focus, with opportunities for children to engage with the landscape in the Hub and also to work under the cover of verandahs facing the oval. The central courtyard has been landscaped to provide clear circulation paths connecting all Learning Communities. The Hub also has a series of exploratory areas for children to play, such a central green, rain garden and chess area.
The result is a facility that unites the existing site and offers diverse and flexible spaces that excite and invigorate learning opportunities.
