Vale Robert 'Bob' Sly

Published: Monday 12 April 2021

It is with great sadness that the ACT Chapter of Learning Environments Australasia advise of the unexpected passing of one of our founding members, Robert ‘Bob’ Sly.

Following a brief stay in hospital, Bob passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on Sunday 4 April.

Bob has been an integral part of the Canberra architectural community over the last 50 years, completing a broad range of projects through his practice Munns Sly Moore, always with a passion for the creation of meaningful and engaging educational environments.

Bob was pivotal in the organisation of the LEA Australasian Conference ‘Meeting Places, Learning Spaces’, held in Canberra in 2015 and the establishment of the ACT Chapter of Learning Environments Australasia the following year.

His determination to bring people together and commitment to the collaborative process of design, has seen the ACT Chapter grow and thrive over the last five years.

Bob’s enduring legacy extends beyond the inspiring buildings he has helped to create for students in Canberra and beyond.  It is this legacy, and his passion for knowledge and learning, mentorship, and generosity, that continues to instil in those that knew and worked with him.

Our thoughts are with Bob’s wife Di and their children, Sam, Jordan, Jess, Todd, and their families.

Above all, that we are at our best when we work together.
