PECHA KUCHA: Recapturing 2020
Due to COVID-19, the Victorian Chapter of LEA missed a year of scheduled live events. To recapture these lost opportunities, each 2019 LEA Education Design Award Winner presented their projects in our first event of the year. Not only was it our first event of 2021, but also the first Pecha Kucha for LEA Victoria.
The Pecha Kucha format is centred around the idea of 'talk less, show more' and involved the presenters showing 20 slides for 20 seconds each for a total presentation of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. For this event, each of 2019's LEA Victoria Award Winners presented their project in a loose Pecha Kucha format using between 10-20 slides. Some went over 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Some went less.
One of the fun things about the Pecha Kucha format is the speed of the presentations and the proclivity to mess up. Watch Dr Ken Woodman present No 42 Architects' St Anne's College Kialla, the Category 1 Winner for New Educational Facility. In particular, enjoy the part where Ken puts his doctorate to good use when he forgets what slide he is on.

- St Bernadette's Catholic Primary School presented by Zvonko Orsanic from NEAD Architecture and Rod Allan from ROAM Architects, the Category 5: Winner for Best Renovation under $5 million.
- St Paul's College presented by Cathy Chapman from Clarke Hopkins Clarke, the Category 4 Winner for Renovation, over $5 million.
- Wyndham Tech School presented by Nick Shearman from Gray Puksand, the Category 2 Winner for New Individual Facility, over $8 million.
- Whittlesea Tech School presented by Audrey Whicker on behalf of Clarke Hopkins Clarke, the Category 3 Winner for New Individual Facility, under $8 million.
- St Dominic's Catholic Primary School STEAM Centre presented by Jane Briese from Minx Architecture, the Category 6 Winner for Renovation Under $2 million.
- St Mary MacKillop Catholic Primary School presented by Cathal Dolan from Minx Architecture, the Category 7 Winner for Landscape and Outdoor Learning Area.
- "Places For Learning - Contemporary Designs in Education" Book presented by Kneeler Design, the Category 8 Winner for Innovative Education Initiative.
Not only were the presentations fun, but they gave us a chance to 'Lighten Up' after the difficulties of 2020. We hope to see you at many more virtual, hybrid, and live events this year. Our next event is a live tour of the multi-award-winning Carlton Learning Precinct.
